To Catch An Earl by Kate Bateman

Eileen's Thoughts

WOW!!! I loved, loved, loved Emmy and Alex’s story in To Catch an Earl by Kate Bateman, book two in her Bow Street Bachelors series. This fantastic Regency romance of a jewel thief and a rake who helps Bow Street catch criminals is a chase that warms one’s heart.

Alex Harland never planned to become an agent of inquiry but the excitement of an investigation is the challenge he needs in his life. Being asked to track down the Nightjar, a famous thief who has been collecting France’s crown jewels has him crossing paths with the beautiful and elusive Emmy Danvers.  Being around Emmy allows him to solve his one unsolved curiosity; that of the mysterious woman who once stole a kiss from him and left him wanting so much more.

Emmy is the daughter of the notorious thief, Nightjar, and learned long ago how to safeguard her secrets; her love for Alex being one of those secrets. Alex knows Emmy is the Nightjar but needs proof before he can arrest her. It is the perfect excuse for him to follow and stay close to her. When Emmy’s life and her family are threatened, Alex is determined to keep her safe. Keeping Emmy safe takes Alex on a different path, one of falling in love.

Ms. Bateman wrote a wonderful, amazing, and emotional story that is not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with sizzling chemistry, witty banter, endearing character, twists and turns, as well as a swoon worthy romance giving Emmy and Alex a chance at love, happiness, and a future neither expected.  I highly recommend To Catch an Earl to other readers and look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Christy's Thoughts

I really enjoyed This Earl of Mine and the characters Kate Bateman created in her Bow Street Bachelors series. Book two, To Catch an Earl, is also a compelling and well written story with fully developed characters. I especially liked Alex’s camaraderie with Seb and Emmy’s bonds with her family. These elements seemed genuine and real.

Emmy is being coerced to take up her father’s goal of collecting the jewels that were stolen from a French crown. His intention was to be patriotic and restore them to the French people. But her creative heists put Emmy directly in the crosshairs of Bow Street agent Alex Harland who has been tasked with finding the jewel thief known as the Nightjar (a nocturnal bird).

Trying to outwit each other and stay one step ahead creates witty exchanges as a cat and mouse game ensues. That is until someone commits murder in the name of the Nightjar, then all bets are off.

Adding to the dynamic between Alex and Emmy is a meeting between the two prior to Alex leaving for war four years earlier. He was captivated by a woman at a masked ball. She is “the one who got away” and he is still searching for this masked woman whose fragrance continues to linger in his heart.

I cannot wait for Seb’s book. I am eager to meet the woman who forces him to reconsider his no marriage vow, as he makes it clear that no woman is worth the aggravation.

Sue thoughts

I just adored To Catch an Earl and could not put it down.  I LOVED Emmy!  Such a fun, sassy female who had no problem putting Alex in his place!  I loved her quick wit and the things she would say. I enjoyed how she challenged Alex every step of the way and she would own her actions.

I also really enjoyed Alex.  He is a great, noble, honest man who always wanted to do the right thing.  It was fun watching him fall so hard for a thief!  Overall this book was wonderful and I can’t wait for Sebastien’s story!

About Kate Bateman

Kate Bateman

Kate Bateman, (also writing as K. C. Bateman), is the #1 bestselling author of Regency, Victorian, and Renaissance historical romances. All her books feature her favorite feisty, intelligent heroines, (badasses in bodices!) wickedly inappropriate banter, and sexy, snarky heroes you want to both strangle and kiss…

Her Renaissance romp, The Devil To Pay, was a 2019 RITA® Finalist for Historical Romance.

Kate wrote her first historical romance in response to a $1 bet with her husband who rashly claimed she’d ‘never finish the thing.’ She gleefully proved him wrong. When not traveling to exotic locations ‘for research’, she leads a not-so-secret double life as a fine art appraiser and on-screen antiques expert for several TV shows in the UK, each of which has up to 2.5 million viewers. She splits her time between Illinois and her native England, and writes despite three inexhaustible children /monsters and a number-loving husband who still owes her that dollar.
