Pride, Prejudice and Other Flavors
by Sonali Dev
Award-winning author Sonali Dev launches a new series about the Rajes, an immigrant Indian family descended from royalty, who have built their lives in San Francisco…
It is a truth universally acknowledged that only in an overachieving Indian American family can a genius daughter be considered a black sheep.
Dr. Trisha Raje is San Francisco’s most acclaimed neurosurgeon. But that’s not enough for the Rajes, her influential immigrant family who’s achieved power by making its own non-negotiable rules:
· Never trust an outsider
· Never do anything to jeopardize your brother’s political aspirations
· And never, ever, defy your family
Trisha is guilty of breaking all three rules. But now she has a chance to redeem herself. So long as she doesn’t repeat old mistakes.
Up-and-coming chef DJ Caine has known people like Trisha before, people who judge him by his rough beginnings and place pedigree above character. He needs the lucrative job the Rajes offer, but he values his pride too much to indulge Trisha’s arrogance. And then he discovers that she’s the only surgeon who can save his sister’s life.
As the two clash, their assumptions crumble like the spun sugar on one of DJ’s stunning desserts. But before a future can be savored there’s a past to be reckoned with…
A family trying to build home in a new land.
A man who has never felt at home anywhere.
And a choice to be made between the two.
When you read a book by Sonali Dev, you get to experience more than just the words on the page. Ms. Dev’s writing is rich, full of emotions, family drama, and oh ~ the flavors! You have been warned! She’ll have you wanting to try every dish in her books! Pride, Prejudice and Other Flavors is no exception! I absolutely loved it! It was also a fun experience, because every so often I’d discover similarities with the original version of Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen, but in Ms. Dev’s version the rolls of the main characters are reversed. Also, the focus is more on social and financial status.
Trisha Raje has a strong personality and is one of the top Neurosurgeons in the country. She seems arrogant at times, but just like Mr. Darcy, her actions and feelings are often misinterpreted. Her relationship with her family has its challenges, but she’s determined and will do everything she can to make up for the mistakes she’s made in the past and find the acceptance she craves, especially from her father. I love the bond between Trisha and her family, especially between her siblings and cousin.
DJ Caine~DJ, DJ, DJ… What a man. He’s handsome, had a rough upbringing and is the most devoted brother. He will do everything in his power to save the life of his sister, who is only living relative he has left. Also, who doesn’t love a hero that can cook? I could almost taste the delectable dishes he prepared. Lucky Trisha, who got to try them all and relish with delight. I loved the chemistry and witty banter between Trisha and DJ, and the ~oh, so swoony moments! ~ I really loved how DJ and Trisha managed to clear their preconceived assumptions about each other throughout the story, bringing them closer and closer every time.
I highly recommend Pride, Prejudice and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev if you enjoy stories with family drama, relatable characters, humor, witty banter, great chemistry, touching moments, passion and lots of flavor! I loved this story so much, that I’m going to listen to the Audio version next!
