Jenny Holiday

Today’s featured guest is USA Today-bestselling and RITA®-nominated author, Jenny Holiday! Learn some interesting facts about Jenny in this short Q&A. Leave a question or comment on the blog for a chance to win a print of Paradise Cove! (U.S. & Canada only)

What genres do you write?

Romantic comedy (though in my backlist I have some regencies and some non-comedic contemporary romance).

Coffee or tea lover?

Coffee in the morning, mint or licorice herbal tea at night.

Name one thing on your bucket list.

Seeing the Northern Lights.

There’s a train you can take from Winnipeg to Churchill, Manitoba, that takes two days and has glass ceilings. If I could design my own no-expense-spared vacation, I’d take that train to Churchill and then check into a fancy hotel that comes with Northern Lights excursions.

Do you have pets?

Nope! Not an animal person! Though my son has fish. He names each type of fish one name because he says there’s no way to distinguish between individuals. So for example, he has five cherry barbs he calls, collectively, “the Shermans.”

When I wake up every morning I…

Work! I try to get up early and get a couple hours in before the household day begins. This has been especially true during lockdown, when the household is always in the house!

Weirdest or unique thing you own.

A lot of people remark on this painting I have in my dining room. It’s a picture of a woman emerging from inside a dressmaker’s dummy, and it’s painted on vintage sewing patterns, which are visible from behind (which is why it’s framed in plexiglass). It’s entitled Inside Sylvia Plath’s Oven, which adds to the creep factor. The funny backstory to this painting is that I met the artist, Stef Lenk, at a restaurant in Toronto actually to buy it. She was bringing the painting, and I had cash for her. I got there first and was sitting on the patio. The waiter asked me what I was doing, in a small-talkey sort of way. I didn’t want to sound like a jerk, so I didn’t want to say, “I am here to buy a painting because I am very fancy,” so I said something kind of vague about how I was waiting for someone to do a transaction with. This made him think I was planning a drug deal,  and he tried to kick me out. So then I had to be like, “No, no! I’m buying a painting!” and look like a fancy jerk anyway. I wasn’t sure he believed me until she actually arrived with the painting. To this day, when I look at my creepy painting I think about how it almost got me kicked out of a restaurant.

Do you have any hobbies or particular skills?

I really don’t! I am remarkably not crafty and can’t carry a tune. I am freakishly good at remembering lyrics and long strings of numbers; does that count? It’s become kind of a family party trick.

What do you hope readers will experience or gain when reading your stories?

I don’t have any sort of preconceived idea of how readers should experience my books. I think people read for lots of reasons: because they’re looking for an emotional experience, because they’re looking for distraction, because they want to be entertained, because they’re working toward a Goodreads goal. I am here for all of it!

What inspired you to write Paradise Cove?

Paradise Cove is the second book in the Matchmaker Bay series. I don’t know that I had a single inspiration, but I knew from the outset that the hero was going to be Jake, who is an extreme loner and kind of the town hermit. He came to mind pretty much fully formed and I wrote him into book 1 knowing he was going to be the hero of book 2.

Three words that best describes your writing style.

Funny, steamy, emotional

Author Spotlight & Giveaway: Jenny Holiday!

From the USA Today bestselling "master of witty banter" (Entertainment Weekly) comes a hilarious and heartwarming romance about a big city girl who never expected to find the man of her dreams in the tiny town of Matchmaker Bay.
Dr. Nora Walsh has just been dumped in spectacular fashion, making it the perfect time for a major life change. She figures taking over the medical practice in tiny Matchmaker Bay for a couple of years will help her get over her broken heart, and then she can head back to the big city. But when the first man she sees looks like a superhero god, she wonders if maybe there's something to small-town living after all. Jake Ramsey also has a broken heart -- one he never expects to heal. He doesn't need people anyway and is content hiding out in his secluded cottage on the beach. But after helping Nora with a medical emergency, he finds himself opening up to the witty, warmhearted doctor. Soon the local matchmakers are working overtime to pair them off, and Jake begins to wonder if his campaign to get Nora to stay is for the town or because he can't bear the thought of her leaving.

I don’t know that I’m familiar with this author, though I read so much, I more often recognize a title, than who wrote it (my bad!). I laughed when I read about Jenny’s little problem in the restaurant. I’m looking forward to reading Jenny’s books.

  2. Tamarae

I was introduced to Jenny Holiday through the first book in this series and I fell in love. I’ve been reaching out and reading her other works.

And seeing the Northern Lights is also on my bucket list!!

I love the first book in this series. It was my introduction to Jenny Holiday and I fell in love. Such an amaxing writer and everything I have read from her has been amazing. I’d love a copy of the 2nd book in this serious.

And seeing the Northern Lights is on my bucket list as well!!

  4. Jen

Jenny is one of my favourite authors! Her books are wonderfully written and so much fun! I haven’t read Mermaid Inn yet but it’s next on my list so I’d love to have Paradise Cove close by to dive into right after!

  5. Lana

Jenny is new to me as an author. I haven’t read many romantic comedies so I would love to read one of her books.
Jenny, how many hours a day in general do you write? How many drafts do you typically write before you send it to your editor. Have you ever thought about self-publishing? Why… or why not? I would love to see your responses.

  6. Catherine

I adore Mermaid Inn and am excited for Paradise Cove!
Seeing the Northern Lights is also on my travel list. I met my friend’s fiance in December, he lives in northern AB, and I told them that after she moves out there when I come visit I want to plan it so that we see the Northern Lights and he said with a smile “I can see them from my living room window.” I have never been so jealous of someone in my entire life!
