THE PRINCESS AND THE ROGUE by Kate Bateman
WOW!!! I loved, loved, loved Anya and Seb’s story in The Princess and the Rogue by Kate Bateman, book three in her Bow Street Bachelors series. This fantastic Regency romance of a princess in danger who’s hiding in plain sight and the rogue who helps Bow Street catch criminals while protecting her is a story that warms one’s heart, especially since these two swore to never fall in love and marry.
Princess Anastasia, Anya, Denisova fled Paris after news that her brother had been killed at Waterloo and being hounded by an abusive man who wants to marry her for her title and wealth, not for love; a man she has refused before. Arriving in London, Anya is hiding as plain ‘Anna Brown’, companion to a wealthy, elder duchess.
Sebastien Wolff, Earl of Mowbrey and Bow Street investigator does not believe in love, despite his best friends having found it. During an evening visit to a brothel, Wolff shared a passionate kiss with a beautiful stranger who was not one of the girls working there. Leaving frustrated, unable to forget her, he tries to learn more about her, especially who she is; making him reconsider his view on marriage. Sebastien can’t believe his luck when he discovers his mysterious woman, but becomes concerned upon learning of her connection to a case involving a missing Russian princess and a Russian traitor.
When Anya realizes that the dangerous traitor is getting closer to finding her she accepts Wolff’s offer of protection and a room at his gambling hall. Living in such close quarters and helping Wolff with his Bow Street cases, the compelling and shared attraction between these two increases and the sizzling chemistry between them would electrify the gambling hall, if possible. With Anya’s life in danger, Wolff is determined to keep her safe, and while doing so, these two find themselves having fallen in love, despite her being a princess and him being a rogue.
Ms. Bateman wrote a wonderful, amazing, and emotional story that is not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with sizzling chemistry, witty banter, endearing character, twists and turns, as well as a swoon worthy romance giving Anya and Sebastien a chance at love, happiness, and a future neither expected. I highly recommend The Princess and the Rogue to other readers.
Sebastien Wolff, Earl of Mowbray is the last of his group of friends to still be single. He believes there is no single woman who could get him to settle down. Enter Anna Brown, aka Princess Anastasia Denisova. Anna fled Russia after word that her brother Dimitri died in battle to escape Count Vasili Petrov, the Russian traitor who wanted to marry her for her money.
While in London, trying to keep low, Anna becomes a companion to the Dowager Duchess of Winwick to earn some money. The dowager just happens to be the great-aunt of Sebastien. Anna also spends time at her friend, Charlotte Haye’s, infamous brothel helping to teach the girls how to read, write and be a lady. One evening Sebastien enters the brothel looking for some fun and sees Anna. He decides that is the woman he wants. When Anna refuses, they end up kissing and the chemistry is off the charts. This begins the fun chase. Sebastien cannot seemed to get Anna out of his mind but he has no idea who she is until he sees her with his great-aunt when he agrees to accompany them to the country. When Anna’s life is threatened, Sebastien takes matters into his own hand and moves Anna in with him at his gaming hall. The more time these two spend together, the closer they get until they can no longer stop their attraction. During this same time, Sebastien enlists Anna’s help with the murder of a Russian man. As the mystery of the murder comes to a surprising conclusion, lots of interesting things comes to light…..and Anna and Sebastien find their perfect happy ending.
I loved this story. There was the perfect amount of suspense mixed with a great love story. I just loved both Anna and Sebastien. Anna was so strong and gave up so much for her freedom. Sebastien was fun because I love seeing an alpha man falling hard for the perfect woman. Overall, this was a great end to a great series.
